Monterrey, Mexico, Sep 7 (EFE).- One person was killed and 10 others injured Tuesday in an explosion at an oil refinery in the northern Mexican town of Cadereyta, state-owned Petroleos Mexicanos and authorities said.

Pemex said the blast took place at 9:20 a.m. in the facility 50 kilometers (31 miles) northwest of Monterrey, capital of Nuevo Leon state and headquarters of many of Mexico's biggest corporations.

The explosion, caused by a leak in a compressor, spurred a fire that was quickly brought under control, the company said in a statement.

An engineer was killed and two other Pemex employees were badly burned, Pemex said. Eight other workers, three of them contractors, suffered minor injuries.
