Bogota, Sep 2 (EFE).- An 11-year-old Colombian girl severely injured when an Aires airlines plane crashed last month on the Caribbean island of San Andres died at a Bogota hospital, raising the death toll from the accident to two, a hospital spokesman said.

Maria Camila Angarita, who was traveling with her parents and grandmother on the plane, died Wednesday from the serious head injuries she suffered and "multiple systemic failure," Simon Bolivar Hospital spokesman Carlos Eduardo Hernandez said.

The girl "could not finally recover," her "vital signs faded" and she died, Hernandez said.

Lightning struck the Aires airlines Boeing 737-700 on Aug. 16 as it was preparing to land at San Andres Island's Gustavo Rojas Pinilla Airport.

The plane, which was covering the route between Bogota and San Andres, was carrying 131 people at the time of the accident.

Amar Fernandez de Barreto, 73, died on the day of the crash, which left more than 100 other people injured, including 13 listed in serious condition.

Only six of the people aboard the plane, including an 18-month-old baby, were not hurt in the accident, which caused the aircraft to break into three pieces.

Maria Camila, one of the people most seriously hurt in the accident, was taken to Bogota for treatment.

Most visitors to San Andres, one of the Colombian Caribbean's top tourist destinations, arrive by air.

Five Brazilians, five French nationals, four Americans, two Germans and two Costa Ricans were among the survivors.
