Oaxaca, Mexico, Sep 3 (EFE).- The pilot and all four passengers died Friday when a small plane crashed in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, authorities said.
Killed were federal lawmakers Guillermo Zavaleta Rojas and Juan Huerta Montero, the mayors-elect of the Oaxaca towns of Santa Catarina Juquila, Joaquin Cortes; and Huatuculco, Lorenzo Lavariega; and pilot Osvaldo Manzano, state Public Safety Secretary Javier Rueda told Milenio TV.
The accident took place around 11:30 a.m. as the Cessna was about 500 meters (1,639 feet) from the airport in the Pacific resort of Santa Maria de Huatulco.
The plane, which took off from Atizapan de Zaragoza, appeared to fall from the sky on the approach to the airport.
Zavaleta and Huerta represented congressional districts in Oaxaca and Guanajuato state, respectively. Both men belonged to Mexico's governing National Action Party, or PAN.
The four politicians were on their way to Santa Maria de Huatulco for an international forum sponsored by a non-governmental organization, the PAN said.
A team from the Oaxaca Attorney General's Office went to the scene to begin an investigation of the accident, which came hours after a helicopter crashed while on a crop-dusting mission in another part of the state, killing the pilot and co-pilot.
